An Intellectual property rights World intellectual property organization is one of the sixteen specialized agencies of the United Nations. World intellectual property organization has 184 member states and 24 International Treaties. World intellectual property organization is headquarterd in Geneva, Switzerland. It was created in 1967.
World intellectual property organization has a global information network and links for over 300 Intellectual Property Offices (IP offices) in all WIPO Member States. WIPOnet is the foundation for WIPO's intellectual property services. There are Twenty four treaties which are administered by WIPO and WIPO convention. Some of the treaties are Washington treaty, Budapest treaty, Patent law treaty, Trademark law treaty etc.
World intellectual property organization was formally created by the Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization, which entered into force on April 26, 1970. WIPO seeks to "promote the protection of intellectual property throughout the world." WIPO became a specialized agency of the UN in 1974.
The WIPO Secretariat, or International Bureau, is based in Geneva. WIPO staff, drawn from more than 90 countries, includes experts in diverse areas of IP law and practice, as well as specialists in public policy, economics, administration and IT.
WIPO works with a wide spectrum of stakeholders, including other intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, representatives of civil society and of industrial groups. Every two years WIPO's Director General presents a Program and Budget document to Member States for approval. This detail about the objectives, performance measures and budgetary planning for all proposed program activities. The financial activities of WIPO are governed by the Financial Regulations and Rules.
The current Director-General of World intellectual property organization is Francis Gurry, who took office on October 1, 2008. Almost all United Nation Members are Members of WIPO (non-members are the states of Kiribati, Marshall, Islands,Micronesia, Nauru,Palau, Solomon Islands, TimorLeste, Tuvalu and Vanuatu, as well as the entities of Palestinian Authority, Sahrawi Republic, and Taiwan).
